Due to the interest in Feng Shui, originally a science for determining the proper location of houses and graves, and the practice of Tai Chi and Qi Gong, these words became ingrained in our vocabulary. Yin represents the soft, passive, and receptive aspects of the universe; yang complements this as the active, moving, and creative force. Together, they form everything conceivable and inconceivable in the world we know. Yang is spirit, yin is matter, and one cannot exist without the other.

Hexagrams

These two concepts form the basis of the Yijing, the Chinese Book of Changes. The Yijing consists of sixty-four chapters, and each chapter contains a figure of six lines: a hexagram. Such a hexagram is a mixture of whole and broken lines. The whole lines represent yang, the broken lines represent yin. The hexagrams are the core of the Yijing. Each hexagram is a depiction of a possible situation, a combination of yin and yang, and according to the Yijing, every situation in life can be represented by one of the sixty-four hexagrams. Because yin and yang are distributed differently in each hexagram, sixty-four different images are created, each with its own dynamics and field of action. Every situation, every experience, can be represented by one of the sixty-four hexagrams. In this way, the Yijing encompasses the entire universe.

Change

A hexagram is a depiction of a situation, but situations are rarely static; they often transition into one another, and one situation brings about another. Through the so-called ‘moving lines’ in a hexagram, the Yijing can indicate the change responsible for the new situation, and if you know what that change is and what causes it, you can respond to it. Going along with the dynamics of life is what the Yijing teaches you.

The Text

In addition to a hexagram, each chapter has added texts that delve into the meaning of the hexagram in symbolic terms. The text translates the value of the hexagram into practice and tells whether a hexagram should be seen as favorable or unfavorable. The hexagrams and the text mentioned here are called the ‘basic text,’ estimated to originate around 800 BC. In addition to this basic text, the Yijing contains later annotations, the so-called Ten Wings. These Ten Wings contain the essence of Chinese thought; they have been crucial for the development and spread of the Chinese worldview and have been invaluable to many Chinese schools of thought.

The Yijing as an Advisor

Because the Yijing encompasses the entire universe with its sixty-four hexagrams, we can use it to gain insight into life situations. We can present a question or situation to the book and use various methods to determine the answer hexagram of the Yijing. The answer of the Yijing will generally provide insight into the here and now: ‘this is what is happening, and in a situation like this, this action (or non-action) is appropriate.’ In this way, the Yijing makes the principles of yin and yang practically applicable. The Yijing is a book that guides you on your life path; it is a guide that shows you the choices available and tells you what the best choice might be. You are then free to make that choice or not. The Yijing makes you aware of your own freedom and responsibility. This is the great strength of the Yijing: you may not always control what happens in your life, but you can control how you deal with it. And in that, the Yijing can advise you.

Yin and Yang During the hippie movement in the 1960s, Eastern philosophies were introduced to the West, and the concepts of yin and yang became common knowledge.
